Then come back to this article. The SAT essay prompts have several important things in common: They’re all passages that try to convince the reader of the veracity of the author’s claim They’re all around the same length (650-750 words) They’re all meant to be analyzed and an indian essay, written about in a relatively short period of time (50 minutes) This means that you can have a pretty good idea ahead of community building time of what types of argument-building techniques you might see when you open the 2014, booklet on test day. The main techniques the building essay, author uses aren't going to be overly complex (like the first letter of every word spelling out a secret code), because you just don’t have the time to analyze and write about steps a dissertation, complex techniques. And because of that, you can prepare yourself with SAT essay examples that’ll be likely to found across persuasive passages about community essay, many different issues —we've provided some ideas below. We've chosen two examples of evidence, two examples of reasoning, and two examples of stylistic/persuasive elements you can use as stellar evidence to support your thesis . Play to the features of the passage – if there are a lot of facts/statistics, make sure to discuss that; if it dwells more on personal anecdotes/appeals to emotion, discuss those. For each example below, we also show you how you can use the type of evidence to support your thesis across a range of prompts. This should prove to you how effective pre-planned examples are. So, without further ado, onto our list of multipurpose support for any SAT Essay prompt. The most basic way author builds an argument is by introduction, supporting claims with evidence . Community Essay? There are many different kinds of evidence author might use to support her/his point, but I'm just going to discuss the two big ones I've seen in the various official SAT Essay prompts that have been released. These two types of evidence are Facts and Statistics and Anecdotes . Example Type #1: Facts and Statistics.
Employing statistics and facts to bolster one's argument is one of the tok essay, most unassailable methods authors can use to build an argument. This argument-building technique is particularly common in essays written about scientific or social studies-related topics, where specific data and facts are readily available. Statistics usually show up in community building essay the form of tok essay help specific numbers related to the topic at hand - maybe as percents, or maybe as a way to communicate other data. Here're a couple of essay examples of statistics from an official SAT essay prompt, Let There Be Dark by Paul Bogard: Example : 8 of 10 children born in the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way. Example : In the United States and following is not one of persuasive, Western Europe, the amount of light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year. Factual evidence can also be in the form of non-numerical information. Often, you'll see facts presented with references to the research study, survey, expert, or other source from which they're drawn. Here's another example from Let There Be Dark:
Example : Already the World Health Organization classifies working the night shift as a probable human carcinogen. Another form of evidence that is building often used as an alternative to actual facts or statistics is the anecdote. This type of evidence is most often found in speeches or other sorts of essay prompts that are written as a personal address to the reader. An anecdote is a short story about to be an indian, a real person or event . When an author discusses own personal experience or personal experience of someone they know or have heard of, that's anecdotal evidence. Community Building? Here's an example of (part of) an anecdote from an official SAT essay prompt that was adapted from a foreword by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter: One of the most unforgettable and humbling experiences of essays our lives occurred on essay, the coastal plain. We had hoped to see caribou during our trip, but to gap in essays, our amazement, we witnessed the migration of tens of thousands of caribou with their newborn calves. In a matter of a few minutes, the sweep of community building tundra before us became flooded with life, with the sounds of grunting animals and clicking hooves filling the essays on gender differences in economic decision-making, air. The dramatic procession of the Porcupine caribou herd was a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife spectacle. We understand firsthand why some have described this special birthplace as “America’s Serengeti.” Even though anecdotes aren't statistics or facts, they can be powerful because it’s more relatable/interesting to the reader to read an anecdote than to be presented with dry, boring facts.
People tend to essay, put more faith in experiences if they can personally connect with the proud an indian essay for kids, experiences (even though that doesn't actually affect how likely or not a statement is to be true). In the example above, rather than discussing the building, statistics that support the creation of wildlife refuges, Jimmy Carter instead uses an gender education anecdote about community, experiencing the wonder of nature to illustrate the same point - probably more effectively. By inviting the profiles in courage, reader to experience vicariously the majesty of witnessing the building, migration of the Porcupine caribou, Carter activates the gender gap in, reader's empathy towards wildlife preservation and so makes it more likely that the reader will agree with him that wildlife refuges are important. All authors use reasoning to some extent, but it’s not always a major part of how the author builds her/his argument. It's not always enough just to throw out community building essay, support for a claim – an author may choose to use reasoning to explain how the evidence presented actually builds the argument. Example Type #3: Counterarguments and Counterclaims. One way in which an proud essay author might use reasoning to persuade the community building, reader to accept the claim being put forward is to discuss a counterargument, or counterclaim, to proud an indian, the author's main point. Building Essay? The discussion (and subsequent neutralization) of tok essay counterarguments is found in prompts across all subject areas. A counterargument or counterclaim is simply another point of view that contradicts (either fully or partially) the author's own argument. When some might claim, however, or other contrast words and phrases show up in an essay prompt, the author is likely presenting a counterclaim. Building Essay? Here's an example of an effective presentation (and negation) of a counter claim from an official SAT essay prompt, The Digital Parent Trap by Eliana Dockterman: “You could say some computer games develop creativity,” says Lucy Wurtz, an administrator at the Waldorf School in Los Altos, Calif., minutes from Silicon Valley. “But I don’t see any benefit.
Waldorf kids knit and build things and paint—a lot of really practical and gender essays, creative endeavors.” But it’s not that simple. While there are dangers inherent in access to Facebook, new research suggests that social-networking sites also offer unprecedented learning opportunities. So how does bringing up an opposing point of view help an author build her argument? It may seem counterintuitive that discussing a counterargument actually strengthens the main argument. However, as you can see in the brief example above, giving some space to essay, another point of view serves to to be an indian essay, make it seem as if the discussion’s going to be more “fair.” This is still true whether the community, author delves into the counterargument or if the proud essay for kids, author only briefly mentions an opposing point of view before moving on. But a true discussion of the counterargument , as is essay present in Dockterman's article, also shows a deeper understanding of the topic than if the article only presented a one-sided argument . And because it demonstrates that the author knows the topic well enough to be able to see the issue from multiple sides, it means that the reader is more likely to trust that the author's claims are well-thought out and worth believing. In the essays on gender differences decision-making, case of the essay, Dockterman article, the author not only mentions the opposite point of view but also takes the time to get a quote from someone who supports the essays on gender differences decision-making, opposing viewpoint.
This even-handedness makes her following claim that it's not that simple more believable, since she doesn't appear to be presenting a one-sided argument. Example Type #4: Explanation of Evidence. In some cases, the clarity with which the author links her evidence and her claims is integral to the author's argument. As the College Board Official SAT Study Guide says, Reasoning is the connective tissue that holds an argument together. It’s the “thinking” — the logic, the analysis — that develops the argument and community essay, ties the claim and evidence together. This is one of the trickier argument-building techniques to discuss (at least in which is not one of basic of a my opinion), because while it is present in many essay prompts, it isn't always a major persuasive feature.
You can pretty easily identify an author's explanation of evidence if the author connects claims to support and explains it , rather than just throwing out evidence without much ceremony or linking to building, the claim; however, whether or not the explanation of the evidence is a major contributing factor to the author's argument is somewhat subjective. Here's a pretty clear instance of a case where an tok essay author uses explanations of each piece of evidence she discusses to logically advance her argument (again from the Dockterman passage): And at MIT’s Education Arcade, playing the empire-building game Civilization piqued students’ interest in history and was directly linked to an improvement in community building the quality of an indian essay their history-class reports. Unfortunately, the building essay, explanation the Official SAT Study Guide gives for winners, how to discuss an author's reasoning is a little vague: You may decide to discuss how the author uses (or fails to use) clear, logical reasoning to draw a connection between a claim and community building essay, the evidence supporting that claim. But how exactly you should go about doing this? And wh y is gender it persuasive to clearly explain the link between evidence and claim?
In general, when an author explains the logic behind her argument or point, the reader can follow along and understand the author’s argument better (which in some cases makes it more likely the reader will agree with the author). In the Dockterman example above, the building essay, author clearly lays out data ( Civilization leads to improvements in history class), a claim (this is because of engagement with the game and thus the subject material), provides data that back up that claim (retention rate skyrockets when students do things for essays differences in economic, themselves), and links that smaller claim to a larger concept (actively browsing pages on a computer or tablet is way more brain-stimulating than vegging out in front of the TV). This clear pattern of data-explanation-more data-more explanation enables the reader to follow along with Dockterman's points. It's more persuasive because, rather than just being told Civilization leads to improvements in history and having to take it on faith, the reader is forced to reenact the thinking processes that led to the argument, engaging with the topic on building essay, a deeper level. Examples of Stylistic/Persuasive Elements. This final category of examples is the top layer of steps argument building. The foundation of a good argument is evidence, which is often explained and building, elucidated by reasoning, but it is often the addition of stylistic or persuasive elements like an ironic tone or a rhetorical flourish that seals the deal. Proud To Be An Indian For Kids? Vivid language is truly the icing on the persuasive cake. As with explanations of building evidence, vivid language can be found across all topics of essay prompts (although they usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic).
Vivid language is pretty easy to spot - it shows itself in similes, metaphors, adjectives, or any words that jump out at you that don’t seem to have purely functional purposes . Here are a couple of examples - the first is Paul Bogard again: …show that what was a very dark country as recently as the 1950s is now nearly covered with a blanket of light. This example is relatively restrained, using the steps to completing a dissertation, metaphor of a blanket of essay light to add emphasis to Bogard's discussion of light pollution. A more striking example can be found in another official SAT essay prompt, adapted from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech Beyond Vietnam - A Time To Break Silence: Vietnam continued to essays on gender differences decision-making, draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube. Vivid language is an effective argument building device because it puts the reader in the author’s shoes and draws them into the passage . If used in moderation, vivid language will also make the topic more interesting for the reader to read, thus engaging them further. In the excerpt taken from Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech above, the phrase demonic destructive suction tube is startling and building essay, provocative, meant to rouse the essays differences in economic, audience's indignation at the injustice and waste of the building, Vietnam war.
If King had left out the second part of the sentence and only said, Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money, his point would not have had as big of an impact. Example Type #6: Direct Addresses and essays on gender, Appeals to the Reader. Building? The last category I'll be discussing in this article are direct addresses and appeals to the reader. These stylistic elements are found across all sorts of different passage topics, although as with the previous category, these elements usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic. Direct addresses and in courage winners 2014, appeals to the reader are wordings or other stylistic devices specifically designed to provoke a response (often emotional) in the reader . This category covers many different elements, from appeals to emotion to rhetorical questions. Community Building Essay? Here's an example of an appeal to essays differences in economic decision-making, emotion, taken again from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech: Perhaps a more tragic recognition of reality took place when it became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the poor at home.
It was sending their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and to die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the population. And here's an example of a rhetorical question (from the Paul Bogard article): Who knows what this vision of the night sky might inspire in each of building essay us, in our children or grandchildren? Appealing to the emotions , as Martin Luther King, Jr. does in his speech, is an alternate route to persuasion, as it causes readers to emotionally (rather than logically) agree with the author . By describing how the war was causing their sons and their brothers and their husbands to which of the the three basic essay, fight and die, King reminds the reader of the terrible costs of war, playing upon their emotions to essay, get them to introduction, agree that the Vietnam War is a mistake, particularly for the poor. Rhetorical questions , on the other hand, get the readers to step into the author's world. By reading and thinking about the author's question, the building essay, reader engages with the topic on proud an indian, a deeper level than if the essay, reader were just given a statement of profiles in courage winners 2014 what the author thinks . In the community, case of the Bogard example above, the profiles in courage winners 2014, rhetorical question draws the reader into thinking about his/her descendants, a group of people for whom the reader (presumably) only wishes the best, which then puts the reader into a positive mood (assuming the reader likes his/her descendants). As you can see, these examples of different argumentative techniques can be extracted from a lot of different article types for a wide range of topics . This is because the community building essay, examples themselves are so meaningful and complex that they can be used to discuss a lot of issues. The main point is, you don't have to wait until you see the prompt to develop an arsenal of types of argument-building techniques you can use to support your points. Instead, preparing beforehand how you’ll discuss these techniques will save you a lot of time and anxiety when the test rolls around . Introduction Help? The College Essay as an Early Memoir. Occasional reflections on the admissions process by Caren Osten Gerszberg, the mother of a high school junior. Last weekend, I participated in community a weekend writing workshop. In a sun-filled room overlooking the Berkshires, I sat amid 30 or so other writers for two days, as we talked, listened, read and practiced the art of memoir writing. On the first day of the workshop, Dani Shapiro, the introduction help, author who led the workshop, talked about inspiration, memory and building, the ways to enter into the telling — and in our case, writing — of a story. There I sat, struggling to put parts of my story onto in economic paper.
Into what incident, relationship or place did I want to delve? How would it feel to community unlock something that resides within me? How would readers feel when they interpret my words? At one point, I looked out the window and gender gap in education essays, the notion of the college essay popped into my mind. I suddenly realized that when these 17-year-old college applicants are drafting their “personal statement,” they are indeed writing a short form — or a portion — of their memoir.
My daughter, Nicole, has been giving thought to her college essay since her 11th-grade English teacher assigned students to write four different essays in community building essay that vein. I’d read the drafts of those essays, and was touched and amused by the subjects — her heritage, middle name, love of storytelling, and steps to completing, a ropes course experience — she chose, remembered and community building essay, recounted. Over these last several weeks of summer vacation, Nicole has been working, and working some more, on her common application essay. Proud To Be? She’s gone back and building essay, forth between two ideas, trying to gender gap in education essays perfect both, hoping that the one she ultimately chooses will best reflect who she is. Community Building Essay? Her essay will not be an account of her accomplishments, but rather a piece of tok essay introduction help herself that reveals itself on paper. Reorganizing my office this summer and digging through years of files and papers was part of my summer agenda. And in community doing so, I came upon my own college essay.
Although it was interesting and emotional to read, I wasn’t too impressed with the end result. The topic was my grandfather — a Holocaust survivor — and steps to completing, all that I’d learned from his passions and community, ability to appreciate life after surviving the atrocities of a concentration camp. “My grandfather has planted a seed in me which contains positive emotions of essays life and all it comprises. Community Building? This seed will grow, and to completing, I will pass it on to others so that the community building, world will produce more people who appreciate life’s offerings.” My grammar was surprisingly strong, but the writing felt, upon rereading, repetitive and unsophisticated. I don’t even recall showing it to gender gap in education essays anyone before sending it off; maybe it would have been better if I had. I’m not sure that writing a personal essay or memoir is ever easy. Community Building? We set out to tell a story, and hope that our readers will be able to identify with, or relate to our story, or perhaps just take something away upon essays on gender differences in economic, which to reflect.
While I sat in community building my safe haven last weekend, I listened intently as people in the room read portions of what may one day make it into their memoir — should they choose to write one — or may have been perhaps a part of in courage 2014 their college essay. Community Building? Some exposed personal tragedies, relationships gone awry, and life-changing revelations. Others shared snippets of life’s mundane moments that nevertheless left a lasting impression. It felt liberating to be, and write, in such an environment. For Nicole and to be an indian essay for kids, her fellow applicants, however, the slice of their story will be writing of another realm. Community? The pressure is on to produce a personal statement that is simultaneously unique, heartfelt, illuminating and entirely impressive. This will be their chance to give a very different set of strangers an essays on gender differences in economic, opportunity to turn the community building, pages of their memoir, perhaps the most important one they’ll write for a long time. Comments are no longer being accepted. My daughter, now a sophomore at Penn, completed her college applications and essays without allowing anyone to review them – especially her parents. She’s always been independent (stubborn?) and this followed the pattern she established early in her childhood. I viewed her applications as truly authentic in in economic the sense that they weren’t polished and proofed by teachers, counselors, and hired consultants. I’m sure there were flaws in the writing and misspellings (she is dyslexic), but somehow the genuine person came through. Community? Of course it made me nervous. Of course I thought my help was needed. But truly it wasn’t; the best thing is that she completely owned the process, and tok essay introduction help, the result.
She did it herself, and that’s the most valuable outcome for an 18 year old setting out into the world. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could stop the community building essay, frenzy and let the kids do this on their own? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could explore who they are during adolescence instead of compiling resumes of activities they don’t care about but look impressive on a college application? And wouldn’t it be wonderful if they learned that their authentic selves are good enough without a bunch of adults pushing them to be something else? My advice is to proud to be for kids trust them enought to let go; let them own the process. Sure they will make mistakes. Building Essay? Sure they will suffer disappointments.
But what better preparation could they have for life? As a college admissions counselor, I read many of these personal essays. They are by turn funny, touching and sometimes awkward. It is essay 2014, hard to consider such efforts as a memoir because truly a 17 year old has so little of life to reflect on. For the most part, we view an essay as something that a student can use to building essay demonstrate that they can write something that adds another dimension to the black and tok essay introduction, white statistics reflected by their high school transcript and standardized test scores. Although it is important to spell all the words right and for community essay goodness sake get the profiles in courage essay winners 2014, name of the institution correctly the essay, rest should not be a source of angst for these students.
Write something that sounds like you and it will stand up for itself. Writing the college essay can be difficult because it is so unlike any other writing assignment that a high school student has ever done. They are told to be witty, descriptive, and engaging, but at the same time they are trying to sell themselves and their personality to a committee of strangers. We find that as long as students pick one anecdote, tie it to past accomplishments and future aspirations–almost any topic can make a great essay. Gap In Education? Still, it is hard to community essay convince many students not to re-write their resume with paragraphs or write all about their role model in life without ever divulging much about themselves. College essays are great practice for that future professional balance between humility and gap in essays, self-promotion. Essay? It is really wonderful when we see a student embrace a well-chosen topic. While writing a college essay can be difficult, I actually liked writing my essays, especially the one I submitted as part of the common application (and used for five or six schools). The key for me, was writing the essay on my terms. I planned it, but not too far in advance that the topic was no longer personally relevant.
I revised and rewrote it, but I never let my parents or anyone else see it. (I just trusted myself and profiles in courage winners 2014, didn’t want my voice to be changed as result of others’ editing.) In fact, when I left an edited copy near the community building, printer, my dad asked if I had left it there for him to edit. I chose a topic that was significant to me, an which following is not one of basic persuasive essay, injury that ended my varsity high school sports career. When I got to college and building essay, starting working with the admissions office, I heard one of the deans suggest that students specifically not write about injuries. According to her, injuries, like the death of steps a grandparent, are commonly written about. She explained to a group of parents and prospective students, that, by in large, teenagers have many of the essay, same significant life experiences. If you choose one those topics, which many students do, it’s even harder for your application to tok essay introduction help stand out. I like to think that mine did stand out, but who knows? Congratulations on a great article! I think students write about such topics as injuries and the death of community building a grandparent because there is essays on gender in economic, very little else in community essay their mundane teenage lives that forces them to reflect in the way these experiences do. Some of the other experiences a teen may have had , however life-shaping(unwanted pregnancy, for gap in essays instance), may be just too painful and private to write about.
My own daughter is community building essay, who she is in gap in education part because of some unique experiences that she simply doesn’t talk about. I know what they are because I experienced them along with her, but she is a very private person (as I am) and community essay, shares very little about how she feels about them. She hates to be under a spotlight, and of the is not one of the three basic persuasive essay, would probably end up choosing a common essay topic that would not force her to stand out. My daughter was fortunate to be accepted by community building, her “first choice” college and has begun her freshman year. While reading Ms. Gerszberg’s musings I recalled my own experiences with my daughter’s application process. I was most struck by the requests for the students to share their innermost thoughts and proud, feelings about themselves and loved ones. This was followed up with requests for the family’s complete financial status, down to the penny. In short, everything is shared. Community Essay? Then the student, who has bared her very soul to the anonymous admissions officers, receives a nice but generic rejection letter.
Ultimately the students are accepted somewhere, matriculate, and succeed. Which Essay? However, I can’t help wondering about the building, lingering effects of this one sided courtship. I think we quickly put it to rest and celebrate the remainder of the senior year, the graduation, the “final summer”, the countdown to matriculation day, and which following is not the three basic parts of a persuasive, the ride back home from college without the community building essay, child. Still, as I feel parental pride and share my daughter’s joy with this next step in her life, I think there is something very wrong with this process that is not fully appreciated. Perhaps she can write about it in her personal statement for graduate school. re: «Over these last several weeks of is not one of parts persuasive summer vacation, Nicole has been working, and working some more, on her common application essay. She’s gone back and forth between two ideas, trying to community building essay perfect both, hoping that the one she ultimately chooses will best reflect who she is.» If Nicole can give herself “permission” to spot the deeper, unexpected, but always “there” connection between her two “separate” essays, she’ll see that she can meld them into one self-defining piece of writing of profiles in courage winners inestimable power and supremely serenity-eliciting satisfaction.
You too, for that matter, with your own writing. What are colleges looking for? People who don’t care what they’re looking for. That’s what the community, amazing process of writing a college essay is really all about. Interesting article. Here’s an tok essay introduction, interesting link to actual essays, some of which may surprise you.
I find it difficult to buy the idea that editing or advice removes a writer’s voice. Building Essay? Good editing does not, or else published prose wouldn’t show its author’s style. The editing is essays, too heavy-handed if a person’s voice can’t be heard. It’s like polishing a piece of figured silver–the polish makes the figures clearer and sharper, but doesn’t efface them. I wrote two essays — one generic, and the other highly personal, which I didn’t show anyone because I didn’t feel I could. In the end, I decided to send the personal one, even though it hadn’t been vetted. I got into building, my reach school without having the best grades or scores; I think the essay must have stood out in the sea of this-experience-made-me-a-better-person essays. I also work with a company that does a lot of proud an indian for kids college counseling for building essay high school students, and gender essays, specifically student athletes who are hoping to community play a sport at that school, and maybe even use that extra curricular passion to gender gap in education essays leverage them in the admissions process. We also have ex-college admissions officers on building essay board who have read a lot of essays. We have all come to the conclusion that the to completing, essay is one of the most important pieces in the college admissions process.
In many cases it is the only way to personalize yourself (especially when there is no interview) to the admissions officer, and show your character. Many folks say that the essay should by no means be a memoir. It is much easier for the writers character to be conveyed if they show a “glimpse” or a “peek through the building essay, curtain” of their life, instead of the steps to completing a dissertation, whole picture. Also, essays about lessons learned can be great for building showing that, but discussing a major turning point in gender gap in education essays ones life can often be forced when coming from someone so young. Athletes writing about their passion for community building essay sports is profiles in courage essay, rather taboo. But on the other hand, writing about any other extra curricular activity or hobby (such as knitting mentioned above) would be a great way to show an officer something interesting about yourself that would never show up on the transcript. I also do not envy the kids applying to colleges these days. On one hand they should be enjoying their last year of essay highschool, and on the other hand they are making a decision that will not impact the next 4 years of which of the following is not one of the three basic parts of a essay their life, but the next 40 years. While most big public universities require an essay, I wonder how important that essay is for a student that fits easily into the admission requirements.
It seems like it is not important at building, all really and an indian essay, it’s a shame that kids who are going this route are made to waste time with this nonsense. When the university we expect our kids will attend had to ban letters of recommendation (because they were aiding disasterous violations of the public trust) I cheered. One less stress on seniors in the application process. Ms. Gerszberg I was so pleased to read your commentary on the essay as memoir. After reading so many applications, as an community essay, independent Admissions Counselor (and former staff counselor), I see this phenomenon daily. But memoirs rarely make good essays. When students try to write “authentic” accounts of profiles in courage their lives, they often lose sight of their audience: the admissions department. In so doing, they often fail to provide useful information to community essay admissions staff, telling about friendships made, love lost, desires unrequited without how these things relate to college.
Admissions folks can make educated guesses regarding how the memoir-like essay translates into essays decision-making, a great student at their college, but a good essay needs to take you there. Nonetheless, who can resist? When I was 18 and about to go to college, I wanted (a la Whitman) “to sing myself.” It’s a rite of building essay passage. Furthermore, applicants have a reasonable assurance that someone will read their essay, something that a blog or FaceBook can’t really guarantee when you really need it. Knowing that someone is winners, listening and listening close enough to evaluate the community building, essay’s content invites all kinds of tales, many inappropriate.
All of this is to say: the College Essay Memoir is not usually useful for College Admissions–but it’s here to stay. Like any memoir, however, it’s important to make sure it fits the audience.
